Rara Lake Nepal's Largest Freshwater Lake

Rara Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Nepal and one of the country's most spectacular natural destinations. Located within Rara National Park in Mugu District of Karnali Province, the lake attracts visitors with its crystal clear blue water, surrounding pine forests, snow capped mountains, and peaceful atmosphere. The lake lies at an elevation of approximately 2,990 metres above sea level. Covering an area of around 10.8 square kilometres, it stretches about 5.1 kilometres in length and 2.7 kilometres in width.

Natural Beauty

The colour of Rara Lake changes throughout the day depending on sunlight and weather conditions. During sunrise and sunset, the lake reflects the surrounding hills and mountains, creating unforgettable scenery. Flora and Fauna:- Rara National Park is home to many rare species of plants, birds, and wildlife. Visitors may encounter Himalayan black bears, musk deer, red pandas, and more than 200 species of birds.

Best Time to Visit

The best seasons are March to May and September to November. During these months, the weather remains pleasant and the mountain views are clear. How to Reach:- Travellers usually fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Talcha Airport in Mugu. From Talcha, the lake can be reached after a short hike. It is also accessible by road, although the journey is longer.

Visitors can enjoy hiking, horse riding, photography, camping, bird watching, boating where permitted, and nature walks.
